Taxi passengers get on board to help raise cash
9:10am Saturday 28th January 2012
PASSENGERS using a Bury taxi firm are handing over more than just their fare at the end of a journey.
For they are digging deep into their wallets to help raise money for Bury Hospice.
Tiger And Tram Cars, in Bolton Road, Bury, has joined the charity’s fundraising efforts by placing collection boxes on the dashboards of their 40 vehicles.
Drivers are explaining to passengers why the boxes are there and encouraging them to support the hospice.
They are also backing the charity themselves by putting their tips into the collection boxes.
Manager and co-owner, Raja Shazad Khan, said: “I wanted to do something to help the hospice because I’ve heard lots of good things about it. This is a way of helping the community and giving something back.
“I have explained the collection box to passengers and they are really pleased to hear that we’re helping.
“A lot of people have told me they’re raising money for the hospice too or they have friends or relatives who have been treated there. I’ve had a great response and everyone is willing to help.”
Mr Khan hopes that taxi firms and other businesses will follow his example.
He said: “I would encourage other individuals and businesses to get collection boxes too. It would be really good to see them across Bury and raise as much money as possible for the hospice.”
Claire Warner, the hospice’s fundraising manager, said: “When the firm suggested this idea to us, we were delighted.
“Tiger And Tram Cars have been so enthusiastic and it has been great to get this going with them. A big thank you to them, we really appreciate it.
“If anyone else wants to come on board with anything similar, they should call the fundraising office on 0161 797 1748.”
