Dream fight could still be on for Quigg

4:40pm Thursday 26th January 2012

SCOTT Quigg’s “dream fight” against Rendall Munroe could be back on after the former world title challenger abandoned plans to move down a weight.

Munroe, aged 31, of Leicester, went the distance with WBC super-bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka in 2010, but then decided to try his luck at bantamweight after struggling to get a decent fight in the division.

The move was a body blow for Quigg, who had set his sights on a lucrative match-up with Munroe after winning the British super-bantamweight title in November last year.

Despite moving ahead of Munroe in the world rankings, the 23-year-old Bury boxer felt he still had to beat the Leicester fighter to be considered the best in Britain.

Now he might get his chance.

Ricky Hatton, Munroe’s promoter, said: “Due to Rendall’s exceptional performance in his world title challenge in Japan, he has landed himself in the ‘who needs him?’ club. He’s slick, southpaw, so the world champions don’t want to know.”

Quigg’s fans will get a close up view of his possible next opponent when he fights Jamie Arthur at the Reebok Stadium’s Premier Suite on Saturday, February 4, as Munroe will be fighting Argentinian Jose Saez on the undercard.

One thing is certain, the young British title holder will be in no rush to go for a world belt after watching Guillermo Rigondeaux knock out Rico Ramos at the weekend to become WBA champion in his division Scott said: “Rico won the title, but came up against Guillermo, who he wasn’t ready to face and it showed.

“Guillermo has only had nine fights, but was older and more mature than Rico who never had the experience to deal with him.

“In 18 months I believe I will be at that level.”
